I’ve been meaning to write about this forever now, as I’m often asked about what I’ve done to heal my body. A few months back my husband and I went to Las Vegas to visit our best friends, and we had the time of our lives! I felt amazing while we were there, but by the time I got home, my body was like “whaaaaat?!”
The late nights, eating out, and I’m gonna guess the “few-ish” drinks that involved tequila, soda water and lime (blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-al-co-hol!!) created a storm in my body which lead to poor digestion, and the worst case of brain fog that I’ve had in a long time.
I came home craving bone broth like no other, so I went on immediate damage control. Here’s what I do when I’m feeling “off,” and needing to clear my head. Like yesterday…
1. Bone Broth
I can’t talk up bone broth enough. For reals, this stuff isn’t called the cure-all for nothing. Without a doubt, it’s been the biggest support in my entire healing journey. The gelatin in bone broth helps to seal a leaky gut, and the nutrients are incredibly easy to absorb. When I’m in recovery mode, I aim for 2-3 cups a day of this liquid gold.
Thankfully, I’ve learned to always keep bone broth in my freezer, cause the last thing you want to do is wait while it cooks for days, when you really need it. I freeze my bone broth in a silicone tray, and then store the broth “pucks” in zip top freezer bags. Each “puck” is exactly 1/3 cup, so I know exactly how much to take out when I’m using it for recipes.
2. Collagen
I didn’t realize how big of a difference grassfed collagen actually made in my life until I ran out of it for two weeks. I now swear by this stuff! Collagen is incredible for both your gut and your joints, and is also a good source of protein. Collagen is a super fine, white powder that doesn’t have any taste and mixes easily into cold or hot liquids. I love adding it to my green smoothie every morning!
3. Turmeric
Known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is my new favorite spice. I love adding it to my soups, eggs & smoothies, and I’ve learned to love its unique flavor! Turmeric also happens to make a great natural food dye, something to keep in mind if you’re dying Easter eggs in the future!
4. Probiotics
One of my favorite benefits of living a healthy lifestyle is how in tune I’ve become with my body. My body is now very clear with what it needs. When I start to crave probiotics, I know my gut flora (bacteria) is out of whack. I love probiotics in all forms, and I take them in pill form daily, along with sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha. I used to despise the very thought of eating kraut, but now I love it! Farmhouse Kraut is my very favorite, because it’s raw and full of gut healing goodies. As for kombucha, I love GT’s Synergy, although big props to all of you that make your own! (FYI, I’m not being paid by either of these companies, I’m just a big fan of both of them!)
5. Extra Healthy Fats
Long gone are the days that I used to think that fat and oils are bad for you, and that they would lead to all sorts of awful diseases. Well, let’s be clear, some oils are completely terrible, and should be avoided whenever possible. Healthy fats, like coconut oil, ghee and avocados keep me thriving, and I also make sure to get plenty of them in when I’m in recovery mode. I also love adding Brain Octane to my morning smoothie. A little goes a long way with this stuff, and I always notice a great energy boost, as well as a noticeable difference in my mental clarity!
Food can be incredibly healing for the body, I’ve witnessed this for myself many times over. Nothing is more awesome than feeling your body heal itself day by day. Realizing that you can have control over your own health is pretty amazing! In my opinion, true health isn’t achieved from some pill or medication, it’s achieved from your own determination and hard work to living a healthy lifestyle!

What probiotics do you take by pill form? Any other supplements you take?
Hi Amanda! I take MegaSpore Biotic for my probiotic, as well as some digestive enzymes by Standard Process that are ordered through my functional medicine practitioner 🙂
