Ranch Dressing

Apr 4, 2014 · 36 Comments

Although this isn’t technically a new recipe post for me, as it can be found with my Buffalo Chicken Tenders and Buffalo Chicken Meatballs, it’s one of my most popular recipes, so it certainly deserves it’s very own post! I’ve loved ranch dressing for as long as I can remember, but as I changed my diet to a whole foods approach, looking at the ingredients in a store bought bottle of dressing can be quite frightening! My ranch recipe is incredibly easy to make, and you’ll recognize every single ingredient! Plus it’s incredibly delicious! Yay!

I always make a double batch of this because we love using it for everything! That was a lie, I actually make a quadruple batch. Sorry I’m not sorry? Seriously, it’s THAT GOOD! Want to get kids to eat their veggies? Serve them up with homemade ranch! Burgers, fries, dipping veggies, salad dressing, the list goes on for what you could use this for! If you use all dried seasonings (like I do) it’ll last as long as your egg is good for. You’ll never go back to the bottled version once you try this recipe! Enjoy!

Ingredients –

  • 2/3 cup avocado oil
  • 1 egg (preferably pastured)
  • ½ tsp mustard powder
  • 1 tsp lemon juice (bottled)
  • 2 tsp dried dill
  • 1 ½ tsp dried parsley (or about 1 tbsp fresh, minced)
  • ¾ tsp fresh, minced garlic (or ¼ tsp garlic powder)
  • ½ tsp sea salt

Directions –

  1. Place all ingredients in a tall container (I use a 2 cup Pyrex measuring cup). Place an immersion blender at the bottom and turn on. Once the mixture starts to blend together and become thick, move the immersion blender towards the top, until it is well blended. This should take less than a minute!

**FYI this recipe only works if you’re using an immersion blender. If you’re using a regular blender or vitamix, use the basic mayo recipe that can be found HERE. Then just add the dill, parsley, garlic & salt!

Awww, such a bummer, but totally understand! Here’s an egg free mayo recipe, if you ever want to try it! I haven’t tried this recipe, but I’ve heard good things 🙂

Can you use other oil than avocado?

Macadamia nut oil works well! You could also use light olive oil (not extra virgin, which would make it super bitter) it may just have a slightly bitter taste, but the herbs usually cover up the bitterness 🙂

So not a dumb question! I make it all at once, in my giant 8-cup pyrex dish! It involves some math 🙂 It’s kinda embarrassing how quickly we go through ranch, only I’m not really embarrassed! (insert crying, laughing face!)

Oh Boy!!! Hopping up and down to have found this – can I use fresh lemon juice instead of bottled? My issue will be not eating the whole bowl MYSELF! HA

Hi Pam! So happy you found my recipe, it’s so good! I think fresh lemon juice would work fine! Are you using an immersion blender? I believe the bottled lemon juice has to do with the more even acidity if you’re making it in a regular blender, which is a bit more technical 😉 I could eat a whole bowl to myself too!

Is this thin enough to use as a dressing or too thick for that?

Hi Katie! It could definitely be used as a dressing, that’s what my husband uses it for all the time 🙂 If you want it thinner you could blend some extra avocado oil in!

You could use a light-tasting olive oil, just not extra virgin, as it will be bitter. Just an FYI, I get a liter of avocado oil (Chosen Foods brand) at Costco for under $10 🙂

I’ve tried a few homemade ranch recipes but this one is by far my favorite! I subbed half of the dried dill for handful of fresh basil and added about a tablespoon of original nutpods milk to thin it at the end. The flavor is perfect! Thank you so much for sharing 💚
