Are you someone who makes New Years resolutions, or do you think resolutions never work out? I myself don’t really make resolutions, as I see each day as a new day to start fresh, or to work towards building a new habit. I don’t believe that it’s either right or wrong to make New Years resolutions, you just have to find what works best for you!
As each year comes to a close, I always find myself reflecting on the past year, as it seems to pass in the blink of an eye. This past year was crazy and wonderful, all in one. I hope you’ll be able to look back on this past year and see the lessons that you learned, and that you grew from them, as that’s what that really matters.
As 2015 comes to an end and we begin a brand new year, although I don’t set resolutions, I do love to keep certain ideas in mind for the year ahead. These mindset shifts that I’ve listed below have made a powerful difference in my life and have brought me so much more joy, happiness and abundance. I thought I’d share them here, as they may make a difference for you as well!
- Believe in Yourself
Know that anything is possible, and know that the only limits you have are the ones that you create in your mind. Before and after my last surgery, I was told all the things that I wouldn’t be able to do. No more salads because my colon was removed, I wouldn’t ever fully heal, I needed to accept my life the way it was, I would always be sick…the list goes on, and on, and on.
Want to know why I’m healthy today? Because I didn’t believe a word anyone else said, and because I believe they don’t get to choose the life that I live. I get to make that choice, plain and simple. Because I chose not to believe what others told me to be “true,” I was able to create the life that I desired.
- Take Control Over Your Own Life
I believe one of the biggest mistakes we can make is to allow someone else to take control over our own life. We can’t really be blamed for this, as most of us aren’t brought up to believe that we have much control. I made this mistake for many years, thinking doctors would be the ones to heal me and that taking medications with serious side effects was just how it had to be, when you have a chronic disease. I took medications every single day for 14 years because I didn’t believe that I had really any control over my own life.
It was only when my doctors were really out of options, and thought that more surgeries were going to be the answer, that I decided to take a chance on myself. I took back control over my own life, and the results have been nothing short of amazing! Of course we aren’t always able to control what happens to us, but we can control how we react. It can be scary and it isn’t always easy, but I believe it is so worth it!
- Just Be You
We’re all a little weird in our own way, which I think is what makes us so awesome. Unfortunately, magazines, TV and the Internet all want us to believe that we need to fit into this one ideal mold. Imagine just how boring this world would be if we were all the same!
Just be you, because you’re perfect just the way you are. The skills you have, your personality, your love for certain things, the way you carry yourself and talk to others… All of these traits make you who you are. There’s no one else exactly like you, so just be yourself and watch your life change for the better when you stop fighting it so much.
- Be Grateful
Whether you’re having a good day or a bad day, it’s so important to remember how much you really have. Approximately a billion people in this world live off less than $1.25 a day. I honestly don’t know what that would be like, and for that, I am so grateful.
To get the opportunity just to wake up every morning is a blessing that not everyone gets. Each day is a fresh new start, what a gift that is! The more you practice gratitude, the more you will realize just how much you have.
- Follow Your Heart
If there’s one lesson to be learned, it’s to follow your heart with everything that you do. This goes for the people you surround yourself with, decisions you make for your life and career, and really everything else you do. With every single decision I make, I follow my heart and trust my gut. Everything becomes so much easier when I do just that.
I’m so grateful for each and every one of you for allowing me the opportunity to give back. Thank you for sticking by me and supporting my journey. I am forever grateful. I’m wishing you all the very best in 2016! Happy New Year!!
