For the past 6+ months I’ve been making this Iced Matcha Latte with Banana nearly every morning, and it’s become one of my favorite things that I always look forward to. Every single day I have readers message me to ask for the recipe, so I decided to share this with you on my website, so that you’ll have an easy, permanent place to find it!
Given the current times of being in shelter-in-place in California, I’ve been starting my mornings with a workout at home, and then I head downstairs to make this iced matcha latte. This routine has brought me so much joy. It really is the little things that mean the most, especially right now.
When I first came up with this recipe, I wanted to make a matcha latte, but I didn’t want to use stevia or maple syrup in it, like I normally would. The ripe bananas sitting on my kitchen counter caught my eye, and so I decide to use one as my sweetener. This ended up becoming my favorite matcha recipe ever, and I’m stoked to get to share it with you today!
If coffee makes you feel anything less than amazing, then I’d highly recommend looking into matcha. I don’t always do great with coffee, but matcha gives me that uplifted feeling, without any sort of crash or jitters. I LOVE IT.

Why are some matcha brands pricey and others are super inexpensive?:
As I’ve found, you truly get what you pay for here, and not all matchas are created equal.
Higher quality matchas have a very smooth taste and aren’t bitter. Lower grade matcha has a course, gritty and often bitter taste.
In addition, cheap matchas often contain pesticides, lead and/or fillers… none of which I want in my body. In addition, you’ll absolutely notice a difference in the taste, which is kinda everything here.
What is my favorite brand of matcha?
Out of the many different matcha brands that I’ve tried, my hands down favorite brands are Jade Leaf and DoMatcha. While at first glance, it might seem a bit pricey – each jar lasts me (at least) a few months.
By popular request, I also recently tried (September 2020) Vital Proteins Matcha Collagen, which I thought was just alright. The flavor is VERY mild. Once you’re used to the good stuff (aka ceremonial grade), nothing really beats it.

What does matcha taste like?:
I don’t like unsweetened matcha AT ALL. It has a very earthy flavor on its own, which you might be into, but I’m not, hence why I created this Iced Banana Matcha Latte Recipe.
As I’ve found, the quality and brand of matcha that you use is EVERYTHING. I’ve become a real matcha snob, and am not a fan of most matcha latte’s that are served at popular coffee shops, as they often use overly sweetened, cheap matcha.
What are the benefits of matcha?:
Matcha is loaded with antioxidants, and provides vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium. Here’s a great article with more info about the health benefits of matcha.
What kind of milk do I use?:
I personally prefer using almond milk (Malk is my favorite brand) or my homemade oat milk in this recipe, but you can use whatever you’d like!
Note that not all milk substitutes are created equal. Some are loaded with junky ingredients, which I’m just not into myself, and some foam up a ton. While foam is great for coffee, it’s not something that I love in my iced matcha. If you’re using a milk that does foam when blended, I’d start by only blending ½ of the amount, and then add the remaining liquid at the very end.
Does the banana need to be ripe?:
It goes without saying, but the riper the banana, the sweeter this latte will be. Fresh or frozen bananas both work great!
To make this even easier (and because all of my bananas ripen suddenly at once), I slice my ripe bananas, freeze them in a single layer, and they store them in a zip top bag (Rezip is my personal favorite).
What can I sub for the banana?:
Note that without the banana, this will be a completely different recipe, but you’re welcome to sub any sweetener you’d like here.
Why do you add spinach?:
Lately, I’ve started adding a small handful of frozen spinach to my Iced Matcha Latte, to give it a great boost of additional nutrients, and to turn it into more of a smoothie.
As long as I add a small amount, I’m not able to taste it at all, and I love knowing that I’m starting my day with super healthy greens!
I use frozen spinach, as it’s easy to keep on hand, and it helps to make this matcha latte even colder. If you’re gonna go for this yourself, then I recommend adding in the spinach first with the banana & milk, and then adding the remaining ingredients.
This step is 100% optional – you can always add a few spinach leaves to start, just to prove to yourself that you really can’t taste it.
What equipment do I need?:
All you’ll really need to make my matcha latte is the ingredients and a blender. I prefer using my Vitamix blender, as it makes a super smooth matcha, but any blender that you have will work just fine.
Iced Matcha Latte with Banana
- 1 cup milk or non-dairy milk
- ½ ripe banana fresh or frozen
- 1-2 teaspoons matcha powder
- 2 scoops collagen peptides optional – I use Vital Proteins
- Place the almond milk and banana into your blender and blend on high just until smooth.
- Add the matcha, and (if using) collagen peptides to the blender. Blend on medium speed, just until smooth.
- Fill a glass with ice and pour the matcha latte into the glass. ENJOY!
