I know just how overwhelming it can feel when you’re swapping out the regular products that you use for safer versions, but I promise that it doesn’t have to be that way. That’s why today I’m sharing my easiest tips for how to start a safer skin care routine! I’ve included my best tips both written and in video, to make this transition the easiest ever for you.
Why do safer products even matter to me? Let’s back up a bit…
Back when I first changed my diet in 2013 and started reading ingredient labels, I was shocked to find what was actually hiding in the food that I was eating. How could the food industry be so sneaky, and be allowed to get away with so much?
Even knowing this, I still assumed that the products that I was putting onto my skin must be safe…because why would anyone allow otherwise? Over time, I came to realize that the opposite is true.
When I discovered that the United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938, I was like…wait, WHAT.
I then found out that the United States currently bans just 30 ingredients in personal care products, and the remaining ingredients have rarely been tested for safety.
As with everything, when I know better, I do better, and I knew that I couldn’t unlearn this information.
I’m a big believer that the products that we put onto our skin play a vital role in our overall health, and we as consumers, get the rad opportunity to vote with our dollar.
This is part of why I’m so passionate about safer skincare and beauty products – and why I support companies like Beautycounter and Primally Pure, both who are creating positive change in the industry.
For example, Beautycounter prohibits the use of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful ingredients from use in their formulas, all which you can see on their Never List.
If you’re curious about the safety of the products that you’re currently using or are looking into other products, you can easily download the Healthy Living EWG app, where you can scan or search the current products that you use to find out what the rating is. It’s a great way to stay informed!

How to Start a Safer Skin Care Routine:
How to Start a Safer Skin Care Routine in 4 Easy Steps:
1. Start with the products that you use most often:
Back when I started swapping out my skincare and beauty products, I was most often using a cleanser, moisturizer, concealer, a brow pencil, and body lotion, so I started with ordering the safer Beautycounter versions of those. Turns out, they worked even better than the other brand that I was using! Win, win!
2. Swap out as you run out:
When I switched to safer alternatives, I did so as I ran out of the other product that I was using. Since I needed to purchase it anyway, I figured, why not swap it out with a safer version that works just as well, if not better than the one I was using before? It can feel crazy overwhelming to think that you suddenly need to switch out everything, but that isn’t the case. There’s no rush, so go as slow (or as quickly) as you’d like!
3. Add in one at a time:
When you’re transitioning out any of your skincare for different products, it’s super important to add in one product at a time to see how your skin responds. We’re all so different, so what works wonders for me, might not be so great for your skin. This is the easiest way to figure out what works for you, and what doesn’t. Adding in one product at a time, and giving your skin at least a few days – a week to adjust, is always going to be the best approach, no matter what skincare line you’re using.
4. Figure out what’s worth it:
For me, living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean all or nothing – it’s just about finding the balance that works for you. While the majority of my products are made with safer ingredients, not all of them are. This is what works for me, and I hold zero stress around the products that aren’t considered safe. I believe it’s not about doing things perfectly, but focusing on what matters the most to you, and letting go of any stress about the rest. After all, I know that stress plays a HUGE role in my overall health.
