The other day I was at my training center, Apex Movement, and I literally felt like I was frozen in my tracks, when suddenly it hit me – action cures fear.
Below I’m sharing the super simple trick for how to do anything, especially the things that I don’t really want to do. Some of you may brush this off, because it straight up seems too simple, but please don’t.
If you’re struggling with fear or avoiding things that you don’t want to do, I HIGHLY recommend giving this a try. It’s changed my entire life for the better.
How To Do Anything:
Many of you may not realize it, but I face fear on a daily basis. Whether it’s in my training, or publishing a personal post, or debating on if I should start a new project – fear plays a huge role in my life. Avoiding fear would mean staying inside my comfort zone, and I can promise that no one would benefit from that, so I had to learn how to move past it. The same goes for you.
On this particular day that I was at training, I was afraid to try a new obstacle. I realized that the longer I stood there and thought about it, the more fearful I became, and the more fearful I became, the less likely I was to take action.
This goes for EVERYTHING in life. The longer we sit without taking action, the more afraid and stuck we become.
Then, I remembered a life-changing lesson that I learned last year – The 5 Second Rule from Mel Robinson.
This is an incredibly basic idea, but it’s been a complete game changer in my life. I highly recommend the audio book all about the 5 Second Rule, but the basics are that anytime that something comes up that you don’t really want to do, you instead count to 5 seconds, and then you just do it.
I use this trick ALL. THE. TIME.
I use it in my daily life from getting out of my warm and comfy bed early in the morning (I know I can’t be the only one who struggles to get up during the winter), to dealing with technical issues on my website (literally my least favorite), to trying a brand new obstacle in my training.
I count to 5 and then without thinking, I do whatever it is that I don’t really want to do.
The counting becomes almost automatic after doing it a few times, and for me, it stops my mind from taking over and trying to convince me of the 83 million different reasons why I shouldn’t do something. Our human brains are SO crafty. After all, they’re meant to keep us alive, not keep us happy and moving towards our goals.
For me, this simple trick works every single time.
Next time you’re feeling like you don’t really want to do something, even though you know it will help you, try The 5 Second Rule out of yourself and be amazed with just how incredible it is!
