I’ve always been someone who LOVES having a to do list, and I also LOVE checking things off on my to do list. We’re surrounded by distractions these days, and I’ve found that it’s super important to know how to organize your time, so that you can focus on the things that you really want to accomplish.
I’ve tried so many different methods for how I organize my time over the years, and this is what I’ve found works best for me!
How I Organize My Time
Plan The Night Before:
Each night before I go to bed, I plan out the following day. I write out a list of my goals that I want to accomplish in my Passion Planner, in order, along with an estimate of how long each goal will take to complete.
I also organize these goals into categories, so that I’m not all over the place – such as going from computer work, to running errands, to cleaning up my house, and then back to computer work, ect.
I’ve found that I do my best computer work (writing blog posts, responding to emails, etc) in the mornings, so all of those tasks will be one goal that I accomplish together, instead of breaking them up.
Doing this REALLY helps me stay focused throughout the day!
Make The First Goal Easy To Accomplish:
As often as possible, I make my first goal for the day something SUPER easy to accomplish, and also something that I enjoy. For me, there’s something about checking that first item off of my list that sets the tone for my entire day and it helps me to feel as if crossing off more goals will be just as easy and fun.
Over the past month I’ve been starting my day with 15 minutes of writing, and then taking my dogs out to play. That’s been the first goal that I write down, and I love that within an hour of waking up, I can already have it checked off of my list! Your first goal could be something as simple as making your bed, or making a healthy breakfast…whatever it is that will help you to get going.
Go With The Flow:
Does my to do list always get completed? Rarely. Do unplanned events come up during my day? Yep!
Often things come up that need to be handled right away, so they end up taking priority, and my other goals get pushed back a bit, sometimes to the following day. Things can also take longer than planned, but some are also finished more quickly than I planned. Some days I feel like I’m crushing it, and some days it feels like I hardly got anything accomplished.
Here’s what I’ve learned – it’s all okay. The more I just go with whatever comes up during the day, the easier my life becomes.
I recognize that things won’t always go as planned, and that’s simply a part of life. Even if I only finish one of my goals for the day, I’ve learned to be totally okay with that! There’s no need to feel any sort of guilt over something you didn’t accomplish exactly when you wanted to – just keep moving forward and you’ll get there! Guilt is a total waste of energy. 😉
I’d love to hear in the comments below – what’s something you’ve done to help organize your time so that you accomplish more of your goals?
