Years ago I struggled HARD with acne. My doctors could only offer me antibiotics, which in the long run, only seemed to make things worse. I know this is something that so many of you struggle with, so today I’m talking all about how I healed my acne for good, and the three products that made the most significant difference in my skin!
I often wish that I had pictures of my skin back when I was on the acne struggle bus…but to be honest, I was so embarrassed that I didn’t want any photos taken. The acne I dealt with was also really painful at times. I remember my husband applying topical antibiotics all over my face, and us laughing about how he had to literally apply it everywhere. Hey, when all else fails, I’ve gotta laugh!
Back then, I felt like I couldn’t leave the house without makeup on. I believe that our skin is often a reflection of what’s actually going on inside our bodies, which was definitely the case for me.
When I stopped taking hormonal birth control 4 years ago, my hormones went CRAZY. My acne became worse and worse, and no matter how well I ate, it didn’t seem to make a difference. While working on balancing my hormones certainly helped to clear my acne, it’s really these 3 products below that completely cleared my skin for good, and what I still use today for maintenance!
These products work better than ANY others that I’ve tried, including antibiotics. It’s really just a bonus that they happen to be from a company that truly cares about our health and the safety of the ingredients that they use.
Will these products be the ones that work for you? I honestly have no idea. Just as we all tolerate different foods, the products that work for our skin can vary greatly, but I do know dozens of people that have had AMAZING results using these products as well.
My hope is that if you’re struggling with acne, that these products can at least give you a place to start!
How I Healed My Acne
Cleansing Charcoal Bar
Hands down, this is my favorite product EVER. It’s the one product that I never, ever want to go without. This Charcoal Cleansing Bar gently detoxes and purifies your skin, all while leaving it feeling nourished and soft.
I personally use this bar almost daily now, as I LOVE how it leaves my skin feeling. Most often to remove my makeup at night and cleanse my face, I’ll use this Instant Eye Makeup Remover (made without mineral oil or silicone!), if I’m wearing eye makeup, and then I’ll use the Charcoal Bar to cleanse my face.
While I haven’t found that this dries my skin out at all, if you do have drier skin to begin with, I’d suggest to start with using this 2-3 times a week to start, and adjust according to how your skin feels.
To keep my charcoal bar dry in between use, which makes it last SO much longer, and also keeps my shower clean, I use this soap saver.
Balancing Charcoal Mask
Next to the Charcoal Bar, this Balancing Charcoal Mask is another FAVORITE! This mask makes an immediate difference in my skin, and as it dries, I can literally see it pulling impurities from my pores…especially around my nose, as that’s where my skin tends to be the most congested.
I use this detoxing charcoal mask every week or two – really just whenever my skin feels like it needs a deeper cleaning. I leave the mask on for about 30 minutes, but if you already have drier skin, I’d leave it on for 10 minutes to start. You can always adjust depending on how your skin feels!
I’ll also use this as an overnight spot treatment whenever I have a pimple attempting to make an appearance. I was just telling my husband the other day that every single time I’ve used this as a spot treatment, the pimple is literally GONE by the following morning!
I’ve found that using a flat complexion brush to apply the mask makes this last so much longer, as you’ll use much less of the product!
PRO TIP:Â For less mess, simply wash this mask off in the shower!
No. 3 Balancing Oil
I know it sounds crazy to some to put oil on acne prone skin, but this Balancing Oil has helped SO much to keep my skin healthy and to balance out my natural oil production. I LOVE how this leaves my skin feeling, as it’s incredibly soothing. I use 4-5 drops of this every night before bed as my moisturizer.

Your skin always looks FANTASTIC! I’ve been perusing the Beauty Counter site and I’m wondering…. acne isn’t an issue for me but I have neglected my skin and from years of not wearing sunscreen I have developed splotchiness. Is there a regimen/products you would recommend? Might be an early Christmas gift to myself 😉
Thank you so much, Sara! It’s definitely been a journey to get my skin to where it’s at today. 😉 I’ve MAJORLY reduced splotchiness and dark spots by using the Rejuvenating Toner Pads – I swear by them. Sunscreen was not my jam until a couple years ago, haha. I find that you can also cut the pad in half and it’s still plenty for your face, neck and chest, and the pads last twice as long! I can help you to choose other products, such as a great moisturizer for your skin, if you could give me more details as to what you want your skin to look/feel like, as well as describing your skin in terms of oily/dryness. Feel free to let me know here, or send me an email at beautycounter@livinglovingpaleo.com
Hope that helps!
I’m so excited about this post as I am with all of your posts!! Thank you for sharing your skin journey with us! I too have suffered from acne for a while and I’m excited to try these products. What else did you do I nternally to help clear your acne/balance hormones? How long did it take? Thank you!!
Thanks so much, Kate! I personally found that maca powder (I’ve read that red maca is best for balancing female hormones), as well as adding in additional healthy fats into my diet majorly helped to balance my hormones. It definitely took some time, I’d say around a year and a half for them to fully balance out after stopping hormonal birth control, but these two things helped to speed up the process. 😉
Is there ANY way to get BC products when you live in Sweden? From what I’ve seen on the website, they don’t offer international shipping…:/ and I would really like to order from them!!
Hi Sofia! Unfortunately they’re not able to ship oversea’s just yet – but hopefully that will change soon!
I don’t struggle with acne but I am prone to red irritated skin (more like rosacea) what Beauty Counter products would you recommend for that?
Hi Rebekah! Please email beauty@kristenboehmer.com and we’d be happy to help you with skincare recommendations! 💕
