Let me introduce you to the creamiest and most delicious chocolate banana shake. Not only is this chocolate banana shake super delicious, it’s gut-healing and packed with protein, healthy fats, fiber, and potassium! Blend it up this week for a healthy breakfast or snack!
I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease back when I was in 7th grade and I very suddenly dropped from my normal, healthy weight of 90 lbs., to a very malnourished 60 lbs.
I was SO SICK back then, and could hardly keep any food down, so my amazing dad set out to find something that I could tolerate and digest easily.
My dad was into body building back then, so he’d make me chocolate banana shakes, filled with his protein powder for added nutrition.
At that point in my life, I was terrified of food, as almost everything that I ate led to instant, crippling pain. My dad’s chocolate banana protein shake was one of the very few things that I was able to tolerate, so I drank them often!
Fast forward to just the other day when I was reminiscing on this memory, which inspired me to create this Gut-Healing Chocolate Banana Shake to share with you. I’ve upgraded this shake to include gut-healing collagen, a great dose of healthy fats, and a supplement that can help to balance hormones.
Curious about what else I’ve done to completely heal my gut? I’ve got your covered with THIS post all about how I healed my gut and THIS post all about how I knew when my gut was healed.
Even if you don’t have any gut issues, I have a great feeling that you’re gonna love this shake too!
Chocolate Banana Shake Ingredients:
Milk: Use any milk that you’d like for this shake! I used Malk brand almond milk, which I love for its super simple ingredients, and the fact that they use sprouted, organic almonds.
Banana: This is what makes this shake sweet, so the riper the banana is, the sweeter the shake will be! I keep sliced, frozen bananas on hand to make both this shake & my Iced Banana Matcha Latte. Using a frozen banana is what makes this shake super cold – you can use a room temp banana, just know that you’ll probably want to add some ice.
Cacao powder: You can easily sub regular cocoa powder instead of using cacao powder here. I’m all about using whatever you’ve got! I personally prefer cacao as it’s a powerful superfood that’s high in antioxidants and contains essential vitamins and minerals. While cocoa powder gives the same chocolate-y taste, it’s highly processed, heat refined, and contains little to no nutritional value. My go-to brand is Navitas.
Avocado: This is what gives this gut-healing shake its smooth creaminess, like you’d get with using ice cream! Don’t worry, you won’t taste the avocado at all, but it does add a great dose of healthy fats. You can just as easily leave this out of your shake, just know that without it, it won’t be nearly as creamy.
Collagen Peptides: This is by far, one of my favorite gut-healing supplements, which is also amazing for my hair, skin, nails and joints. I swear by collagen and take it daily – Vital Proteins is my favorite brand – you can find it online, at health food stores or at most Costco’s. Regardless of which brand you use, I always recommend looking for pasture-raised or grass-fed collagen. You can also substitute this for any protein powder that you’d like.
Maca: Maca powder has been a long-time favorite of mine, as it’s helped to balance my hormones. It has so many health benefits, which you can read about HERE, but of course adding this is completely optional. Sunfood is my go-to brand for maca powder.
This Gut-Healing Chocolate Banana Shake would also be amazing with a scoop of peanut butter or your favorite nut butter blended in. Enjoy!
