Five Ways to Get Out of a Funk

I’m a big believer that having a positive mindset doesn’t mean pretending that problems don’t exist, and that everything is always perfect. To me, having a positive mindset means truly recognizing the problem, not making it any bigger than it actually is, and training your brain to find the good.

This doesn’t mean that it’s always easy, but with practice (and more practice) it will become more and more natural for your brain to look for the good in any situation. There is always good to be found.

I know what it’s like to feel deeply depressed, and also just to feel like I’m in a funk. During these times, I have to force myself out of my current state of mind, but I’m always grateful that I did.

I’ve come across soooo many different challenges throughout my time here on earth. When life feels like the ultimate struggle (let’s be real, sometimes it does), these are the steps that I take to get myself out of my own head.

Five Ways to Get Out of a Funk

1. Completely Switch Up What You’re Doing

When life is challenging, it’s easy to get caught up in everything that seems to be going wrong. It’s much easier to sit in a corner and cry or feel sorry for yourself than it is to get up and change something, but from my own experience, I’ve found that putting in the effort to get up and completely change what you’re doing is SO worth it.

This could mean writing out your feelings, calling up a supportive friend, or even just getting outside of wherever you are at the moment. Changing what you are doing can change your entire perspective on things.

2. Change The Situation

Ask yourself – is there anything that you can do to change the situation? Feeling like you even have the smallest amount of control in any situation can help to completely change your outlook on life.

Sometimes you won’t have any control over the outside circumstances, but recognize that you ALWAYS have control over how you respond to the situation. Your response can make all the difference.

3. Do what You LOVE

What is it that you absolutely love to do? Is there something that when you’re doing it, you forget that time even exists? DO THAT.

For me, it’s my obstacle course training, reading a good book, cooking, coloring in my adult coloring book, and going on a hike with my dogs.

4. Move

I know from experience that movement is pretty much the last thing that I feel like doing when life has me feeling down. I also know from experience that it’s exactly what I need, so as before my brain can try to convince me otherwise, I get up and move.

Movement can mean heading to the gym, doing gentle stretching or yoga, or even just taking a walk outside – really anything that feels good and right in the moment.

5. Set Aside Technology

I find the best way to ground myself again is to set aside all technology for a bit. Nothing changes my perspective more than getting outside into nature. I love going out on a hike with my dogs, heading to the nearby reservoir, or meeting up with a friend, just to reconnect with what truly matters.
