As with most of us, I spent most of my life making sure that I ate breakfast, lunch and dinner…and of course had snacks in between. Snacks were a must as my blood sugar used to plummet often, making me feel shaky and like I needed to eat right. that. SECOND. Many people I knew experienced this as well, so I always figured that it was normal.
Turns out, it’s totally not.
It wasn’t until I completely changed my diet in February 2013 that I realized that I could go hours and hours without eating and my blood sugar would stay stable.
I’ve now gotten out of the habit of eating just because it’s a certain time of day, and now, I simply eat when I’m hungry.
So, if I’m hungry for breakfast, I’ll eat breakfast! Simple as that! We’re all different, it’s really about finding what makes you feel your best.
Lately, when I do eat an actual breakfast (maybe once a week), it’s basically something like this – 2 pastured scrambled eggs with herbs and Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel seasoning (my current favorite!), a couple pieces of bacon and some greens (arugula is shown in the photo below).
I rarely wake up hungry for an actual breakfast lately, so instead I love making this drink in the morning, which leaves me feeling ready to crush my goals for the day!
It’s maybe not the most gorgeous color, BUT it tastes delicious!
Why I don’t eat breakfast everyday…and what I do instead
Here’s everything that I put into my morning drink:
Coconut Milk or Almond Milk – I use approximately 12-16 ounces.
Collagen – I use 1-2 scoops. This mixes easily into any hot or cold liquid. It’s great for gut-healing, healthy skin, hair, nails, joints…the list goes on and on!
Cocoa Powder – I use approximately 2 teaspoons…basically because I LOVE chocolate and this gives the drink a great flavor!
Matcha Green Tea Powder – I especially love this for the antioxidants. I’m pretty sensitive to caffeine (which is why I only drink decaf coffee on occasion), so I use approximately ¼ – ½ teaspoon in my drink.
Stevia – I add ¼ teaspoon of stevia powder for the sweetness it gives. The green powder that I linked here is in it’s natural form, which I definitely prefer over the super processed varieties.
Maca Powder – I add one teaspoon to my drink. I love using this for its hormone balancing properties, plus the boost of energy that it gives me!
Green Banana Flour – This may sound crazy at first, but hear me out. I’ll occasionally add 1 tablespoon of this green banana flour to my morning drink for the prebiotics (these feed the good bacteria in your gut) that green bananas are high in. It doesn’t give the drink any flavor, but it does thicken it slightly, which I like!
When I want a hot drink I’ll blend all of these in my blender and heat it over the stove until hot. When I want a cold drink, I’ll simply shake all of the ingredients with ice in my blender bottle.
That’s it!
